By Aaron Humes: Dr. Richard Rosado, the Commissioner of Police, on Monday responded to allegations made by the president of the Public Service Union (PSU) Dean Flowers, who accused the Police Department of being used as a tool for political purposes.
Asked how he would respond to the PSU president calling him out in the wake of charges being dropped against 11 Dangriga-area teachers over last week’s “so-called” mechanical failure vehicle protest, Commissioner Rosado directly challenged Flowers through the press to clarify his connection to a high-profile investigation involving public officers. “I want to ask you in the media to ask him how a phone number connected to him is linked to a high-profile investigation,” Rosado asserted, implying that the PSU president may have deeper ties to a high profile criminal investigation that is ongoing.
Earlier, Rosado expressed frustration over what he perceives as a lack of understanding regarding the complexities of policing. He stated in apparent response to Flowers, “It is difficult for me to respond to someone who does not understand the dynamics of policing, who does not understand the challenges in policing. I believe that individual just wants to spew nonsense for his own aggrandizement.”
The comments come after Dr. Rosado met last Thursday and Friday with union leaders including Flowers at his Belmopan office to smooth out issues relating to the Dangriga teachers being summoned to court. The union leaders asserted their members were simply exercising their right to peacefully protest against the impasse with the Government on wage issues, while police maintained they could not inconvenience fellow Belizeans while doing so.
Flowers is yet to respond to Rosado’s comments to the press.
