Commissioner of Police issues statement following heinous murder of woman and child in Belmopan

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams issued a statement following Tuesday’s heinous murder of a woman and a child at the Belmopan Market Plaza.

“The recent murder of the Woman and child in Belmopan is a heinous act perpetuated by a coward. This act have left the people of the peaceful city of Belmopan in shock and disbelief. While some me look at the action of the killer as a mental health issue, I beg to differ,” Compol Williams said.

“From a view of the video footage of the incident, it is clear that the killer knew exactly what he was doing. He arrived at the market, met the family, shook their hand as they excitedly asked him how he was doing. They the began to converse during which he took out his firearm and began shooting at them. He shot at the man first but missed then her pursued the woman and shot her at very close range after which he went after the children,” Compol added.

In addition, the Commissioner of Police said that the murderer’s action depicted that of premeditation and well targeted.

“He knew who he wanted to kill and what he was doing as he executed his plan.

Judging from the footage his action was in no way consistent with a person suffering from some mental health issue. It is my humble belief and from experience that a person with mental health issue would not be so calculated and targeted, but instead would have just targeted anyone in their path,” Williams expressed.

The Commissioner says that while mental health is a live and real issue in our society that needs to be addressed from all front, this matter should not be classed as a mental health issue for doing so is tantamount to us already finding a legal defense for this killer.

Commissioner Williams is asking that we keep the families of those directly affected by this callous act in our prayers and may we continue to collaboration as we work towards making our communities safer.
