By Aaron Humes: Before Election Day, Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police, was determined to ensure that Belize City would remain calm heading into the opening of polls.
He told reporters on Monday that he had to shift resources to ensure the City could return to calm after the bloody holiday weekend: “I spent the entire weekend on the grounds in Belize City working until twelve midnight every night. I took up a team. I even withdrew the south composite. I withdrew the coastal composite and I had all of those assets in Belize City working. Because we wanted to make sure that we bring the city under control and I think that you would be able to attest that following those incidents, the city went calm because we literally moved in with additional resources and we detained a number of these persons who we believe are responsible for the different incidents. And so with that, we were able to restore some calm to the city.”
He further made this guarantee: “I want to categorically and emphatically state to the Belizean people that it is going to be safe for them to come out and cast their vote [on Wednesday] for elections. As much as yes, we are stretched thin, particularly in Belize City, I have put together our operational plans for tomorrow to make sure that we have an adequate number of police officers from the specialized unit to conduct operations in Belize City and those persons who we believe are problematic will be detained. They might not have the chance to vote but we are not going to put the elections at peril because of these people, it’s not going to happen.”
This evening, ComPol Williams told Channel 7 News that as expected, there were no incidents of note and he even had time to vote himself before setting out on a nationwide tour which ended in Orange Walk Town. As for proceedings tonight, he cautioned Belizeans to celebrate responsibly (stores’ prohibition on selling alcohol continues until counting is complete) and take their loss or win with grace.
