By Horace Palacio: A police officer is under fire after a theft incident at J&Y Block Factory on Mahogany Street in Belize City. On Monday, January 6, PC Peter Graham, who was on special duty, was caught on surveillance footage allegedly taking $550 from the business’s cash drawer. The theft came to light after the business owner checked the cash and noticed the discrepancy. Graham’s actions, captured on video, went viral over the weekend, sparking public outrage.
Speaking on the matter, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams expressed his disappointment, stating: “My reaction was… I have to hold that back just now. Sometimes I really and truly wonder what goes through the minds of some police officers. This action or conduct is disgusting… We are police officers. We are charged with the trust and confidence of the public. His conduct in that video goes against the grain of what being a police officer is and so he is suspended immediately.”
The Commissioner confirmed that Graham has been formally charged and is under suspension. He also emphasized the importance of following due process and natural justice. A legal office has been directed to issue Graham a letter regarding his dismissal, with 14 days given for a response. The Commissioner assured the public that the officer’s actions will be addressed appropriately, stating: “The law requires that we follow a process… If I find his reasons are not justified, then I will proceed with his dismissal.”
This is not the first time Graham has faced scrutiny. In 2018, he was linked to a drug plane landing in Barranco but was not charged. The Commissioner clarified that while Graham was detained during that incident, it was unclear whether he committed an infraction. Graham appeared in court and was granted bail of $1,500. He is set to return to court on March 13.
