By Aaron Humes: September 10, World Suicide Prevention Day, is not only a holiday here but marks an important time for communities across the country as they come together to observe Suicide Prevention Month. This year’s theme, “Changing the Narrative of Suicide,” is a call to action aimed at fostering open conversations, reducing stigma, and creating a supportive environment for those affected by suicide.
Data from the Belize Crime Observatory shows 16 suicides reported so far this year, following last year’s total of 27 but down from a recent high of 46 in 2023.
A majority of suicide reports concern young men, with hanging being the preferred means.
Local organizations, mental health professionals, and community leaders have planned a series of events throughout the month aimed at raising awareness and educating the public about the impacts of suicide on individuals and families. Workshops, panel discussions, and support groups will provide safe spaces for people to share their experiences and learn how to support loved ones who may be struggling.
Key messages include the following: Anyone can be struggling; there is always hope; suicide is often complex is but always preventable; warning signs often precede most suicides; talking about suicide encourages individuals to seek help; and most importantly, all threats or mentions of suicide should be taken seriously.
