By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Jose Mai, Minister of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise, announced on Wednesday, May 28, during the 2025 Budget Debate at Independence Hill in Belmopan, that Belize’s coconut industry has successfully entered new international markets. He reported that coconut water exports to Jamaica reached $1.9 million in 2024, with projections set to triple in 2025.
The country also secured agreements allowing exports of green coconuts to Mexico and husk-less green coconuts to the U.S., opening new trade opportunities. Additionally, Guatemalans have begun purchasing dry coconuts from Belize, demonstrating increasing regional demand for Belizean coconuts.
Minister Mai stated that Belize is awaiting approval from the United States Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to begin exporting coconuts to the U.S., a move that would significantly expand Belize’s international market reach.
Already, between January and March of this year, nearly 500,000 nuts have been informally exported to Guatemala alone, further highlighting the growing demand for Belizean coconuts in Central America.
He projected that Belize’s coconut exports could reach up to 20 million coconuts annually, marking a major milestone for the industry.
