By Zoila Palma:  Patrol Commander of the Belize Coast Guard, Loany Ruiz, is spearheading a new initiative aimed at reconnecting children with the outdoors through the Maya Mountain Rangers’ free eight-week Young Rangers program.

The program is designed to reduce excessive screen time among youths by engaging them in healthy, nature-based activities.

Ruiz, the Coast Guard’s first female engineer, is leading the effort to encourage environmental awareness and active lifestyles among young participants.

The program will take place at the San Ignacio Market Riverside Boardwalk on Saturday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., running from March 7 through April 25.

Registration closes on March 5, and participation is limited to the first 30 students.

Children between the ages of 10 and 13 are invited to join structured sessions focused on exploration, protection, and conservation.

Throughout the 8 weeks, participants will take part in hiking, wildlife observation, and basic environmental education designed to build confidence, teamwork, and practical knowledge of their surroundings.

The program is supported by the Belize Wildlife Referral Clinic, Belize Botanic Gardens, and the Belize Raptor Center.
