By Zoila Palma: The Department of Co-operatives (DOC), in partnership with the Resilient Rural Belize (RRB) program, held its third Gender Equality Workshop on November 20, bringing together producer organizations from the Corozal and Orange Walk Districts.
The session took place at the Progressive Sugar Cane Producers’ Conference Room, where 60 participants—including 45 cooperative members and 15 technical officers from MAFSE, DOC, and RRB—gathered for a full day of training.
The workshop featured a comprehensive agenda focusing on gender equity and inclusion, leadership, climate change, financing, and record keeping. Presenters also addressed the importance of diverse participation in management and governance structures as well as compliance with cooperative legislation.
Organizers highlighted the essential role of women and youth in strengthening sustainable agricultural development and building more resilient rural communities.
According to DOC and RRB officials, the training aims to empower participants with practical knowledge they can apply within their organizations to support more inclusive decision-making.
Attendees are expected to return to their producer groups and share the insights gained, reinforcing the broader goal of promoting fair representation and stronger governance across Belize’s cooperative sector.
