Cloudy with a chance of pint bottle: Belize’s Weather Lady drops charge against nephew who attacked her with pint bottle

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man accused of assaulting Catherine Millicent Cumberbatch, widely known as “Belize’s Weather Lady,” walked free on Friday after she told the court she did not wish to proceed with the case against her grand-nephew.

Kalefe Raheem Caceres, 22, unemployed of West Street, appeared before Magistrate Neeshad Mohammed in Court #5, where he was charged with aggravated assault with a broken bottle upon Cumberbatch. The alleged incident occurred on Tuesday, June 9, on West Street in Belize City.

Caceres pleaded not guilty to the charge. The police prosecutor then informed the court that Cumberbatch was present and wished to address the matter. After being sworn in, Cumberbatch told the court she did not want any further court action against Caceres.

The prosecutor asked whether she had been threatened, promised anything, or placed in fear to withdraw from the matter. Cumberbatch told the court she was acting of her own free will.

As a result, the prosecution offered no further evidence and the case was dismissed for want of prosecution. Caceres was then free to go.

According to the police report, Cumberbatch, 61, visited her sister’s home on West Street on June 9 when she heard a commotion inside the house. She reported that she intervened during an argument involving Caceres and his girlfriend and told him to leave.

Cumberbatch alleged that Caceres cursed at her, then went outside, broke a Belikin pint bottle, and attempted to stab her with it. She further alleged that after neighborhood men intervened and took the broken bottle away, Caceres threw a Coke pint bottle at her but missed.

Police were called and Cumberbatch later made a report, which led to Caceres being charged.
