By Aaron Humes: The family and friends of six-year-old Pablo Orellano, the Stella Maris student who tragically drowned two weeks ago in the Hangar area of Belize City after leaving school unnoticed, might soon find the closure they seek as the police investigation nears completion.

Minister of Education, Francis Fonseca, shared on Thursday that the police are finalizing their report, which is anticipated to be discussed with the family before being made public: “The ministry is scheduled to meet with the Belize Police Department either today or tomorrow. We are committed to reviewing the findings with the family first, addressing any concerns they may have. This internal report is crucial for us to thoroughly understand the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking event.” He assured that the report will be shared with the public after the family has had an opportunity to learn about its contents.

This incident has also raised alarms within the community regarding safety protocols at Stella Maris. In light of the tragedy, the ministry has recognized the urgent need for reforms to enhance security measures at the school.

Minister Fonseca further indicated that the school’s principal is expected to retire by the end of April, stating, “We are currently reviewing everything. It’s important that we ensure the right leadership is in place moving forward at Stella Maris.”

Recent media reports highlighted concerns regarding the principal’s conduct, with a leaked conversation bringing to light inappropriate remarks made in response to another parent’s concerns about safety at the school. While Fonseca confirmed that the principal is qualified, the ministry is now actively preparing for a transition in leadership.

Police Commissioner Chester Williams had previously expressed publicly that he did not expect charges to be brought forward due to the burden of proving negligence in anyone’s duties on the day of the tragedy.
