Climate Week visitors explore Port Honduras Marine Reserve during Toledo tour

By Zoila Palma:  As part of Climate Week 2026 activities in Punta Gorda Town, the Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE) hosted 25 visitors representing eight government entities on August 22 for an educational and conservation-focused visit to the Port Honduras Marine Reserve (PHMR).

The group toured the marine reserve, which is co-managed by TIDE, and had the opportunity to learn more about its conservation efforts and operations.

Visitors were also taken to the Boardwalk and the Steven Page Ranger Station at Punta Ycacos, gaining firsthand insight into the work being carried out to protect Belize’s marine resources.

TIDE Executive Director Leonardo Chavarria and other members of the organization’s staff delivered presentations highlighting the institute’s operations and its ongoing conservation initiatives within the Port Honduras Marine Reserve.

Following the presentations, the visitors experienced the natural environment of the reserve firsthand, spending the remainder of the day snorkeling and enjoying the scenic West Snake Caye Beach.

TIDE said it was grateful for the opportunity to showcase its conservation work while strengthening collaboration among government partners.
