Climate mitigation efforts begin in Monkey River

By Zoila Palma:  Climate mitigation efforts have officially begun in Monkey River, a coastal village in southeastern Belize long threatened by rising sea levels and severe erosion.

The announcement was made today by Toledo East Area Representative and Minister of State in the Ministry of Economic Transformation, Dr. Osmond Martinez.

Reflecting on years of inaction, Dr. Martinez emphasized the human cost of delayed intervention. “Imagine if this would have happened 15 years ago. How many climate refugees would have been saved? How many families would still be living on the coastline? How many eroded houses and lands would have been saved?” he said.

For decades, families in Monkey River have struggled to protect their homes as coastal erosion and rising sea levels steadily encroached on the community, threatening its very existence.

Dr. Martinez said the new intervention signals a turning point for the village.

“Today Monkey River is no longer forgotten. It is finally getting the attention it needs,” he said.

The project is being implemented with the support of the Ministry of Rural Transformation.

The minister also expressed gratitude to Minister Oscar Requena, CEO Valentino Shal and the Ministry of Rural Transformation for their continued support. “We will continue to transform the lives of our people in every community, one project at a time,” Dr. Martinez added.
