By Breaking Belize News Staff: A city resident who left a father of three with severe, lifelong injuries after a shooting in 2022 will spend an additional 17 months behind bars.

Clifton Robinson, who pleaded guilty in January 2025 to wounding—an alternative charge to attempted murder—was sentenced on Friday morning in the High Court by Justice Nigel Pilgrim. Robinson was initially facing an attempted murder charge for shooting Albert Reid in March 2022.

Justice Pilgrim began with a five-year sentencing baseline, considering aggravating factors such as the use of a sawed-off shotgun, the serious nature of attempted murder, and the high risk of injury associated with such a weapon. The judge also took into account Robinson’s prior conviction in 2021 for aggravated assault, which led to an additional year, bringing the sentence to six years.

However, mitigating factors played in Robinson’s favor. Witnesses testified to his good character and efforts to reform, including his commitment to a spiritual path. He also showed remorse for his actions, leading the judge to reduce his sentence by one year, bringing it back to five years.

A further reduction was granted based on Robinson’s guilty plea, which earned him a one-third discount, equating to three years and four months. Additionally, the time he spent on remand—604 days (approximately one year and 15 days)—was deducted, leaving him with a remaining sentence of 17 months and 15 days. His sentence was backdated to January 27, 2025, the date he entered his guilty plea.

The court also reviewed a victim impact statement from Albert Reid, who continues to suffer from the consequences of the attack. Dr. Alijah Pott’s February 2025 examination confirmed that Reid still has gunshot wounds to his inner leg and pelvic area. The injuries have led to permanent damage, including bladder dysfunction and erectile issues, as well as ongoing infections that require frequent hospital visits.

Reid shared his struggles in court, stating, “After I got shot by Robinson, my life changed. This is something I would not wish on anyone. I have lived in and out of hospitals due to serious infections. It’s embarrassing to have these issues, and I am disappointed in how my life has turned out.” He also highlighted the financial strain caused by his medical needs and his inability to fully support his three children.

On March 10, 2022, in the Belama Phase 4 area of Belize City, Reid was at the home of Angel Matura when an argument erupted between him and Robinson. As Reid attempted to leave, Robinson chased him and fired a shot with a sawed-off shotgun. Reid managed to escape onto the roof of a nearby house, but Robinson pursued him, reloading his weapon before firing again. The second shot struck Reid in the left foot and right thigh, leaving him severely injured.

Robinson was later arrested and charged along with Angel Matura for the attempted murder of Reid. However, he ultimately pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of wounding, leading to today’s sentencing decision.

Justice Pilgrim emphasized the severity of the offense, noting the rising gun violence in Belize and Robinson’s deliberate actions in chasing and firing multiple shots at his victim. While the court acknowledged his remorse and efforts to change, the judge underscored the need for accountability.

Robinson will now serve the remainder of his sentence before facing the challenges of reintegration into society.
