By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Reverend Jesse Jackson, one of the most recognizable figures in the American Civil Rights Movement, has died at the age of 84.

Jackson, who rose from the segregated American South to become a global voice for equality, spent decades fighting for civil rights, economic justice and political inclusion. For many in Belize and across the Caribbean, his activism mirrored struggles for racial justice and social empowerment closer to home.

Born in 1941 in Greenville, South Carolina, Jackson worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. He later founded Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity), pushing corporations to hire more Black workers and invest in minority-owned businesses.

Jackson also made history in politics, running for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988. His 1988 campaign was particularly strong, winning 13 states and expanding what became known as the Rainbow Coalition, a movement promoting unity across racial and social lines.

Diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2017, Jackson remained active in public life for years.

As a Baptist minister, Jackson often framed his activism through faith, justice and service, principles that resonate strongly within Belize’s own church-going and community-oriented society.

He leaves behind a legacy that shaped American politics and inspired movements for equality around the world.
