By Breaking Belize News Staff: A long-serving Belize City Council employee is out on bail following his arraignment for allegedly wounding his common-law wife during a domestic dispute.
David Zuniga, 37, appeared unrepresented on Tuesday afternoon before Magistrate Black in Court #6, where he was read a single charge of wounding his partner with whom he had been living.
Zuniga initially pleaded guilty with an explanation, claiming that his wife had returned home upset, retrieved a knife, and attacked him. He admitted to kicking her but denied using a knife or stabbing her. Given the nature of his explanation, Magistrate Black entered an equivocal plea of not guilty on his behalf.
With no objection from the prosecutor, Zuniga was granted bail in the sum of $1,500 plus one surety of the same amount.
As part of his bail conditions, Zuniga must relocate and stay at an address on Custard Apple Street in the Fabers Road area, away from the shared home. He is also required to report to the Raccoon Street Police Station every Friday, beginning May 30, 2025. Additionally, he must stay at least 100 feet away from his common-law wife and is prohibited from contacting her or her family members in any way.
Zuniga has been employed with the Belize City Council for the past 12 years. The case remains under investigation.
