By Breaking Belize News Staff: Belize City police have made another arrest following a violent weekend, this time charging a Belize City Council employee in connection with a separate shooting incident that left a co-worker injured.
Travis D. Flowers, 45, a coordinator with the Belize City Council’s Enforcement Department, was detained over the weekend after an alleged attempt on the life of Calvin Cumberbatch, a transport evaluator employed with the Council. The shooting occurred in broad daylight on Saturday, March 8, 2025, around 2:45 p.m. on Orange Street in Belize City.
Flowers appeared unrepresented before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola in Court #1, where he was read three criminal charges: attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm, and dangerous harm upon Cumberbatch. Due to the nature of the offenses, no plea was taken, and Flowers was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until May 13, 2025.
According to police reports, the altercation began when Cumberbatch was walking on West Street towards Orange Street. A black SUV allegedly attempted to knock him down, stopping about six feet away. Cumberbatch identified the driver as his co-worker, Travis Flowers.
An exchange of words escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Cumberbatch reportedly punched Flowers, knocking him to the ground. Flowers then allegedly retrieved his licensed firearm—a 9mm Glock pistol—and fired two shots at Cumberbatch, hitting him in the left shoulder and the left side of his abdomen.
Despite his injuries, Cumberbatch managed to take cover as bystanders intervened, preventing further gunfire. Flowers then fled the scene in a vehicle. Police later recovered a single 9mm expended shell and a projectile on West Street.
An hour after the shooting, police detained Flowers on Vernon Street. He was found in possession of his licensed Glock pistol, which had a magazine containing 15 live rounds. Authorities believe this was the weapon used in the attack, and it has since been seized as evidence.
Cumberbatch was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for medical treatment. Meanwhile, police formally arrested and charged Flowers on Sunday, March 9, 2025.
