By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man has been fined and ordered to pay compensation after admitting to damaging his girlfriend’s vehicle during a domestic dispute in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Joel Saavedra, 30, a server, appeared before Magistrate Ludlow Black in Court #1, where he pleaded guilty to damage to property after smashing the back passenger window of his girlfriend’s 2009 Nissan Altima, valued at $400.
Saavedra’s girlfriend reported to police that her boyfriend returned home between 4:00 and 4:45 a.m. appearing drunk after a night out at Eruption Night Club. The couple argued, and shortly after, she heard a loud bang. When she checked, she found her car window shattered and a rock inside the vehicle.
In court, Saavedra asked if he could simply repay his girlfriend for the damages. However, Magistrate Black imposed a non-custodial sentence of $300 plus $5 court costs for the offense, and also ordered him to pay $400 compensation to the complainant.
All payments are due by September 30, 2025, or Saavedra faces three months’ imprisonment for nonpayment of the fine and distress for failure to cover the compensation.
The woman told police that when she confronted Saavedra about the broken window, he dismissed her concern, saying, “My insurance wah cover it.”
