By Aaron Humes: 25-year-old Christopher Witzil, wanted by police under the State of Emergency, has been apprehended. He is being accused of assaulting a police officer along with other offenses whilst in custody.
The Linda Vista Street, Belize City resident was read four criminal offenses in court for being found without explanation in a dwelling house; aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and using threatening words.
According to police, on Friday, August 30, Witzil was found at the dwelling home of a woman and unable to give an account of himself and why he was there. It is further alleged that while being detained and taken into custody it is alleged that he assaulted Police Corporal Anastacio Uk; resisted arrest by Corporal Uk and used threatening words to Corporal Uk when he allegedly said, “Ah wah bite out yuh throat”.
Witzil pleaded not guilty with an explanation but was told he need not explain today since he pleaded not guilty to all the offenses. The sitting Senior Magistrate explained to him that at a later date, he would be able to give his side of what happened.
Since there was no objection to bail, Witzil was offered bail of $2,000 plus one surety of the same amount which he was not able to meet because before he could post bail, CIB police escorted Witzil back into custody. We were told that he is being detained under the SOE as he is also being investigated in connection to a shooting in the City.
Witzil’s next court date is set for October 15.
