By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 23-year-old Belize City man accused of attempting to rob a Simon Quan Ltd. cashier in broad daylight on the Swing Bridge has been denied bail and remanded to the Belize Central Prison, where he spent the Christmas holidays.
Robert Derrick Stewart appeared in Court #6 before Mannon Dennison, where he pleaded not guilty to attempted robbery and wounding. The charges stem from an incident on Friday, December 19, 2025, involving a cashier for Simon Quan Ltd.
According to police, the cashier was walking toward the Belize Bank on Albert Street around 8:55 a.m. to deposit her employer’s cheques when she reached the Swing Bridge and felt her sling bag being forcefully pulled from behind. She reported struggling with a masked assailant wearing a hooded top and a fisherman-style mask bearing the Belizean flag. During the struggle, the cashier struck her elbow on the bridge, was pushed to the ground, and was punched several times. Despite the attack, the assailant failed to take the bag and fled toward Pink Boutique. Flowers later received medical treatment for her injuries at the KHMH.
Police say minutes later, officers from the GI3 Team spotted a suspect near Marelco wearing a similar mask. After a brief chase through Petillo Coat Alley, Stewart was detained. A search reportedly revealed a mask matching the victim’s description.
Although there was no objection to bail, Magistrate Dennison denied Stewart bail after reviewing the facts, stating he was disturbed by the allegations and noting that the incident occurred during the Christmas season. “This is the Christmas season. You attempted to take instead of giving,” the magistrate told the accused, who responded that it was “a bad time to go to jail.”
Stewart was remanded to prison until his next court date on February 3, 2026.
