Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) noted that the Chiquibul Forest is the birthplace of the Greater Belize Watershed, which includes the Chiquibul, Mopan, Macal, and Belize Rivers.
These rivers are vital to the country’s water supply and form an interconnected system that supports much of Belize’s natural environment.
Looking at the map, the Chiquibul River crosses from the western Maya Mountains into Guatemala and intersects the Mopan River, which in turn crosses back into Belize and joins with the Macal River to form the Belize River.
This network of rivers is essential for the sustainability of our environment, economy, and daily life.
FCD says that as we approach World Water Day, it’s crucial to reflect on the importance of rivers and watersheds in our lives.
These natural systems connect our farms, villages, towns, and cities, making them essential to our water supply.
“Protecting the Chiquibul means protecting our precious water resources. By ensuring the health of these rivers, we can safeguard the flow of life that sustains us all,” FCD reminded.
