By Horace Palacio: Belizeans woke up to partly cloudy skies this morning, as forecasted by the National Meteorological Service of Belize, but they should brace for a noticeable shift in weather as a cold front is set to cross the country tonight.

The 24-hour forecast predicts a mix of sunshine and clouds earlier today, with generally isolated showers. However, conditions are expected to become overcast by the afternoon, accompanied by a few showers and isolated thunderstorms, primarily inland and in the northern regions of Belize. As night falls, residents should anticipate showers and light rain across most areas. The downpour, along with sporadic thunderstorms, will be more prevalent at first but will decrease over northern and central regions after midnight.

Marine conditions will also see significant changes due to the incoming cold front. Winds are shifting from north-northeast at 5-15 knots to north-northwest at 10-20 knots, with gusty intervals. These altering wind conditions will transform the sea state from light-chop to moderate-rough, with wave heights increasing from 2-4 feet to 5-7 feet.

Temperature-wise, coastal areas can expect highs of 84°F (29°C) and lows dipping to 70°F (21°C). Inland regions will experience slightly warmer highs of 87°F (31°C) and cooler lows of 64°F (18°C). The hills, often cooler, will see temperatures ranging from a high of 75°F (24°C) to a low of 60°F (16°C).

Looking ahead, the outlook for Monday and Monday night indicates cloudy and cool conditions with the chance of light rain over southern coastal areas, suggesting the cold front’s influence will linger.

Tides will cycle from a low at 6:14 AM to a high at 11:58 AM, dipping again in the late afternoon at 5:44 PM before rising late at night at 11:41 PM. The sun will rise at 6:25 AM and set at 5:45 PM, framing the day for Belizeans, while the moon will set at 8:26 AM and rise again at 8:21 PM.

Belize’s National Meteorological Service continues to monitor the situation closely, with Forecaster Derrick Rudon providing timely updates. As the cold front makes its presence known, residents and visitors are advised to plan accordingly, keeping abreast of weather updates for safe navigation and outdoor activities.
