Chief Elections Officer warns voter turnout may not reach 50 percent on current trajectory

Posted: Wednesday, March 6, 2024. 4:25 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: As of 3 p.m., 36 percent of the electorate countrywide had cast ballots in today’s municipal elections.

The northern towns of Corozal, Orange Walk and San Pedro lead the way with Belize City not far behind.

Speaking to the Channel 7/KREM News coverage team in Belmopan this afternoon around 3 p.m., Chief Elections Officer Josephine Tamai said she would not be surprised if turnout missed 50 percent, never mind reached 60 percent as that is the expected threshold for municipal elections.

Nonetheless, she encouraged voters to come out and exercise their right, reminding that the vote is secret even through counting.

Political leaders from across the divide have been expressing confidence that voters will favour their political parties – the incumbent People’s United Party (PUP); Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) and minor parties Belize Progressive Party and People’s Democratic Movement as well as independent candidates.

Voters are voting for one mayor and ten councilors in Belize City and one mayor and six councilors elsewhere.

Polls close at 6 p.m. and you can follow Breaking Belize News for the results as they come in.
