Charge upgraded for man accused of child abuse

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Devain Dion Flores Sr., 33, initially charged with common assault for abusing a child, now faces two counts of cruelty to a child. Flores was rearrested and appeared in Court #6 on Wednesday, prosecuted by Commissioner of Police Chester Williams.

Flores had pleaded not guilty to common assault on May 20, 2024. After making bail, he was rearrested and charged with the more severe offenses. COMPOL Williams seeks a custodial sentence, which could carry a maximum penalty of 10 years.

The case was adjourned to June 3, 2024, allowing Flores time to call character witnesses. He remains in Belize Central Prison until then. Flores, formerly a security guard for the National Sports Council, claimed he was fired following his arrest and the viral video of the incident.
