By Breaking Belize News Staff: A charge of unlawful sexual intercourse (USI) against 20-year-old Gian Teck was abruptly discontinued in the High Court on Wednesday after the Crown entered a nolle prosequi, bringing an early end to a trial that had only begun last week.
Teck’s trial, which commenced on Thursday, January 22, 2026, was being heard by a judge alone before Justice Candace Nanton. The matter concluded on its second day when the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) informed the court that the Crown would no longer proceed with the case. No reason was given in open court for the discontinuance.
Teck, who was represented by Attorney David McKoy, was told he was free to go. However, before he exited the courtroom, Justice Nanton cautioned him that a nolle prosequi does not amount to an acquittal and that the matter may be recalled by the Crown at any time.
The prosecution had been expected to call only two witnesses—the virtual complainant and her mother—making the trial a relatively short one. Due to the sensitive nature of the case, Attorney McKoy told reporters only that the matter had been discontinued with the option for the Crown to reinstate it.
Despite the discontinuance of this charge, Teck still faces another similar USI charge pending trial in the High Court of Justice before Justice Nigel Pilgrim, for which he remains out on bail.
Court records show that Teck was last arraigned in June 2024 in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse. At the time, he was accused of having sexual intercourse on two occasions in May 2024 with a 14-year-old minor, allegedly once at a shop and once at a residence.
Wednesday marked the second day of the High Court trial before Justice Nanton when the case was discontinued.
