Champions Benny’s Belize Hurricanes beat subchampions San Pedro Tiger Sharks 101-73 on 2024 Belize Elite Basketball League opening night

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The 2023 champions Benny’s Belize Hurricanes maintained their hegemony over the subchampions San Pedro Tiger Sharks beating them by 28 points, 101-73, on the 2024 Belize Elite Basketball League opening night on Friday at Belize City Civic Center.

The Hurricanes led through all the quarters with Amar Ross totalling 23 points, two rebounds and two assists. Jamell Harris scored 20 points and pulled seven off the glass. 2023 Finals MVP Victor Evans contributed 15 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Glency Lopez netted 14 points with four rebounds and two assists. Sidibe Bourama connected 13 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. Nick Phillips scored eight points and pulled 10 rebounds.

The Tiger Sharks were led by captain Jihad Wright with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and two blocks. Raheem Thurton scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Francis Arana sank 11 points to go with seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Martevious Adams contributed ten points and recorded ten rebounds. AJ Smith added ten points as well, with five rebounds.

The 2024 BEBL features seven teams as the Punta Gorda Panthers have opted out of the annual tournament for financial reasons, according to BEBL Commissioner Glenn Gill. Additionally, the Belmopan Trojans have taken up the spot left vacant by the Belmopan Red Taigaz.

The other teams are the Belize City Defenders, the Orange Walk Running Rebels, the Cayo Western Ballers, and the Griga Dream Ballers now going by the name of EZ Investments Griga Dream Ballers.

After Friday’s inaugural game, three games will be played next weekend.

The Orange Walk Running Rebels will host EZ Investments Griga Dream Ballers at the Orange Walk Multi Purpose Complex on Friday, February 2, while the Belize City Defenders will clash with the Pedro Tiger Sharks at the Belize City Civic Center.

On Saturday, February 3, the Cayo Western Ballers will take on the Belmopan Trojans at the Sacred Heart College Auditorium in San Ignacio.

The double round robin regular season should end by Saturday, May 11.
