By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceno and the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) President Katherine Meighan led discussions on national issues related to the business environment.

Meighan told reporters that the amnesty program for medium, small, and microenterprises (MSMEs) needs to reach out to more businesses: “[What we are] trying to do is encourage that as many of our young entrepreneurs or M or micros or S’s or small, medium-sized businesses become a part of that process and formalize themselves as a part of the business community.”

A collateral registry will help entrepreneurs access better financing, while legislation for a national credit bureau is with the Attorney General which the Chamber has been calling for, for a while according to Meighan.

Discussions continue on the issue of tax reform including the General Sales Tax (GST) and income tax. Meighan says the process needs to be simplified and stakeholders educated on it to ensure the system becomes formalized.
The BCCI also commended the government on the recent Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) approval that will see millions injected into the energy and education sectors.

Another meeting has been scheduled in which the Chamber and the P.M. will include import licenses, price controls, and the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Bill.
