By Aaron Humes: As the Commission of Inquiry into the Sugar Industry proceeds, the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) is taking up complaints raised by one of its members, Belize Sugar Industries Limited/American Sugar Refining (BSI/ASR), into how far the inquiry is digging into its private business affairs.
Last month in a press statement, BSI/ASR reiterated that “it cannot share proprietary and confidential information. BSI has also communicated to the government that it will not cooperate with a COI whose platform and focus is to use the process as an avenue to negotiate a new commercial agreement which is a private commercial matter.” It is willing to cooperate on sharing ideas to modernize legislation and regulations, benchmarks for mill efficiency, and strategies to improve cane yields.
BCCI President Katherine Meighan said she shared BSI/ASR’s concerns with Prime Minister John Briceno: “…we also wanted to reiterate and reinforce the need for a line when it comes to do with, you know, business information sharing and where those balances are and the precedent angle and, of course, the aspect of foreign direct investment and that these sort of examples are looked at and these sort of examples are what we need to keep in mind for the longer-term stability and or perception of stability and just the longer-term stability and or perception of stability and just the business environment across the board, right, that’s very, very critical.”
