Description: During the first quarter of the 21st century, phenomena such as globalization, technological development, and migration have brought about changes in the production and reception of literature. Starting from this hypothetical assertion, we ask how the way of making and studying literature has changed over the past twenty-five years. Thus, there are two communities of interest for the theme of this issue of Anuario de Letras Modernas: on the one hand, the literary works published so far this century, as well as the communities of creators; on the other hand, the academic community that, from new theoretical and critical perspectives, works both with the modern literatures of the first quarter of this century and with the earlier literary tradition.

Indeed, understood as verbal creations with primarily aesthetic aims, literatures in European languages have experienced not only a diversification of their material support —ranging from the printed volume to the digital book— but also a change in the way they are produced, particularly due to the widespread use of new technologies, from the advent of the Internet to the recent development of artificial intelligence. These novel patterns influence, as mentioned, several aspects: the composition, the medium, and the content of literary works show these transformations alongside the migratory and globalizing phenomena noted above. Concerns of different kinds— for example, social, geopolitical, economic, environmental— have likewise found greater expression in works of recent decades, whether through canonical forms or via new genres studied in academia.

Meanwhile, at the intersection of the humanities and the social sciences, literary studies have recently undergone multiple paradigm shifts. What epistemological and methodological proposals for reading, analyzing, critiquing, and interpreting have gained relevance after the heyday of critical currents stemming from structuralist and poststructuralist thought? From approaches forged by the various feminist movements around the world to reflections arising from ecocriticism and posthumanism, and including contributions from postcolonial and decolonial studies—as well as theoretical inputs from disciplines such as anthropology, ethnography, and sociology—literary studies have sought to incorporate or refound categories for literary analysis. In conclusion, as noted above, literary studies of our century take place squarely in a context of large-scale migration, economic globalization, and technological innovation that directly impact their perspectives.

In this issue we therefore propose to investigate the reconfigurations that have manifested in this century regarding the creation and critical reception of modern literatures in European languages. Suggested research areas include:
