By Rubén Morales Iglesias: After a commanding start to their campaign, Belize’s Men’s National Volleyball Team faced a formidable Costa Rican side on Saturday evening at the XII Central American Games, falling 0–3 (13–25, 22–25, 12–25) in their second Group B match at Gimnasio Teodoro Palacios Flores in Guatemala City.
The loss brings Belize’s record to 1–1, while Costa Rica remain unbeaten at 2–0, topping the group standings.
Despite the straight-sets defeat, Belize showed determination in the second set, narrowing the gap to just three points before Costa Rica closed it out. Francis Hauze once again led the Belizean offense with 13 points, followed closely by Kaelen Ingram with 12. The duo’s efforts were instrumental in keeping Belize competitive, particularly during the second set’s spirited exchanges.
Costa Rica’s Stanley Grant and Ignacio Morales proved decisive for the Ticos, contributing 14 and 12 points respectively. Their consistent attacking and service pressure disrupted Belize’s rhythm, especially in the first and third sets, which Costa Rica won convincingly.
The result follows Belize’s impressive 3–0 (25–23, 25–20, 25–19) victory over Honduras on Friday, where Hauze and Ingram also led the scoring with 18 and 13 points respectively. That win had placed Belize in a strong early position in Group B, tied with Costa Rica before Saturday’s clash.
With one win and one loss, Belize remain in contention for a semifinal berth. The team will now regroup and prepare for their next group stage fixture, aiming to bounce back and secure a spot in the knockout rounds.
Belize last game in group play pits them against El Salvador at 8:00 pm on Sunday. Meanwhile, Belize’s women’s team, who are 2-0, take on Panama on Sunday.
