By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize’s men’s volleyball team closed out their run at the XII Central American Games with a valiant performance, falling just short in the bronze medal match against Panama in a five-set thriller: 2–3 (25–27, 25–23, 22–25, 25–21, 12–15). The game, played at the Gimnasio Teodoro Palacios Flores in Guatemala City, was a display determination, heart, and high-level competition.

Despite the heartbreak of missing the podium, Belize’s players left a lasting mark on the tournament. Francis Hauze, who led all scorers with 27 points in the bronze medal match, was named the tournament’s 2nd Best Spiker, while Kyron Sutherland earned recognition as the 2nd Best Blocker—both honours reflecting their consistent excellence throughout the Games.

Panama’s Felix Williams contributed 25 points to his team’s victory, helping secure their first volleyball medal since 2013. The match swung back and forth, with Belize rallying to force a fifth set after trailing 1–2. In the final frame, Panama edged ahead in the closing moments, sealing the win at 15–12.

Belize’s journey to the bronze medal match was marked by a strong group-stage campaign, including a memorable win over El Salvador. Though the semifinal loss to Nicaragua dashed their gold medal hopes, the team’s return to the top four after 28 years was a formidable achievement.

Hauze’s offensive firepower and Sutherland’s defensive presence were instrumental throughout the tournament, earning them well-deserved spots among the region’s best. Their individual accolades reflect Belize’s growing stature in Central American volleyball.

While the team may have missed out on a medal, their performance ignited national pride. With youth, talent, and determination on their side, the future looks promising.

Congratulations are in order for Team Belize for representing our country with distinction.
