By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (BOCGA) held a symbolic Torch Welcome Ceremony on Saturday morning at BICGA’S headquarters, the Ned Pitts Olympic House, in Belize City, despite having to cancel the planned citywide relay due to persistent rain and safety concerns.

The torch, which arrived in Belize on Friday afternoon, was brought by a delegation of seven from the Guatemala 2025 Central American Games Organizing Committee, including the official mascot Balami. The flame landed at the Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport at 4:30 pm and was escorted by cyclists, including Derrick Chavarria, into Belize City. Deputy Mayor Miller and fellow City Councillors received the torch from BOCGA President Allan Sharp and took a lap around the Flag Monument roundabout before it was placed at the Olympic House.

Balami: A Symbol of Strength and Heritage

Balami, the official mascot of the XII Juegos Centroamericanos, represents the jaguar—a revered figure in Maya cosmovision. Chosen for its dual nature as both terrestrial and spiritual, the jaguar symbolizes strength, agility, and ancestral wisdom. Balami serves as a cultural ambassador for the Games, embodying the resilience and unity of Central America’s youth and athletes.

Following the ceremony, the visiting delegation departed Belize, returning to Guatemala. A ceremonial torch was left in the care of BOCGA, symbolizing Belize’s participation in the regional sporting movement and its commitment to the values of unity, peace, and athletic excellence.

The XII Central American Games will be held in Guatemala from October 18 to 30, 2025. Belize’s athletes are preparing to represent the nation with pride and determination.
