Three Belizean judokas—Marcello Salam (-60kg), Michael Ortiz (-66kg), and Ishmael Castro (-90kg)—stepped onto the mats Friday at the 12th Central American Games in Guatemala, proudly representing Belize in a day of intense competition.
After successfully passing weight and uniform inspection, the trio entered their brackets with determination, the Belize Judo Federation reported. Each athlete fought valiantly, advancing into the repechage rounds, which offered a second chance at medal contention. Despite their best efforts, none were able to secure a podium finish.
Notably, Ishmael Castro reached the final block of the afternoon group in the -90kg category, displaying skill and resilience. Unfortunately, an injury prevented him from continuing, cutting short what had been a promising run.
Though medals eluded them, Belize’s judokas demonstrated heart, discipline, and national pride on the international stage.
