Fresh off a historic double gold at the Caribbean Cycling Championships, Belize’s Derrick Chavarria returned to international competition on Friday morning at the 12th Central American Games in Guatemala, joining Cory Williams in the Individual Time Trial (ITT) against a stacked regional field.
The event features 12 riders, including top-seeded Sergio Chumil and veteran Manuel Rodas of Guatemala. Chavarria, riding seventh in the lineup, launched his effort at 10:36 a.m., followed by Williams—seeded second overall—who started at 10:40 a.m. as the 11th rider.
The ITT format places each cyclist on the course individually, spaced by timed intervals, with no drafting allowed. Riders have to maintain high speeds while managing fatigue and terrain, making it a pure test of solo strength and strategy.
Chavarria entered the Games with momentum, having claimed back-to-back U23 titles in the Caribbean ITT and Road Race just days earlier in Belize. His tactical maturity and endurance were on full display as he raced alongside the elite field in both events, crossing the line as the top U23 rider in the 156-kilometer road race and dominating the time trial.
Williams, one of Belize’s most experienced international cyclists, carries high expectations into Friday’s race. Known for his explosive power and consistency, he matches up against Central America’s best with poise and precision.
While final results were pending at press time, Belize’s presence in the elite lineup exemplifiers the nation’s rising stature in regional road cycling.
Belize’s cycling delegation continues its campaign with the road race, where Chavarria, Williams, and teammates Oscar Quiroz, Justin Williams, Jyven Gonzalez, and Jaylen Briceño are expected to compete. Quiroz, who recently claimed silver in the elite road race at the Caribbean Championships, adds depth and experience to the squad.
With a blend of youth, experience, and national pride, Belize’s cyclists are making their mark across the region—one race at a time.
