Belize’s National Cycling Team took on the region’s best on Friday morning in the Individual Time Trial (ITT) at the 12th Central American Games in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, with Cory Williams finishing 8th and Derrick Chavarria placing 11th in a competitive 12-rider field.
The race was won by Panama’s Franklin Archibold, who clocked a blistering 41:26 to claim gold. Costa Rica’s Donovan Ramirez secured silver in 41:46, while Guatemala’s top seed Sergio Chumil earned bronze with a time of 42:18. Fellow Guatemalan veteran Manuel Rodas finished in 43:21, placing outside the top three.
Williams started 11th in the lineup at 10:40 a.m., while Chavarria—fresh off his double gold at the Caribbean Cycling Championships—rode seventh, launching at 10:36 a.m. Both Belizeans delivered strong efforts against a stacked field that included seasoned international competitors.
Chavarria’s 11th-place finish came just days after his historic sweep of the U23 ITT and Road Race titles on home soil. Williams, one of Belize’s most experienced riders, held his own to secure a top-eight result.
Belize’s cycling delegation now turns its attention to the road race on Sunday, October 19, where Chavarria, Williams, Oscar Quiroz, Jyven Gonzalez, and Jaylen Briceño are expected to compete. Quiroz, who claimed silver in the elite road race at the Caribbean Championships, adds depth and firepower to the squad.
