By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize’s Men’s National Basketball Team tipped off their 2025 Central American Games campaign in dominant fashion, overpowering El Salvador 83–68 in their opening Group B clash at the Gimnasio Teodoro Palacios Flores in Guatemala City.
Grouped with El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras in Group B, Team Belize wasted no time asserting their presence on the court.
The victory marks a strong start for the Belizean squad, who arrived in the Guatemalan capital earlier this week brimming with confidence and national pride. The team’s energy was palpable from the opening whistle, translating into a fast-paced, high-intensity performance that kept El Salvador on the back foot for most of the game.
“Team Belize is Ready!” the Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association had declared ahead of the tournament. “Our Men’s National Basketball Team is locked in and ready to hit the court at the Central American Games in Guatemala! The energy is high and the focus is on—let’s cheer them on as they represent Belize.” 
Group B features Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama, with all teams vying for a top-two finish in their respective groups to advance to Tuesday’s semifinals. The championship culminates with medal matches on Wednesday night.
The team’s next challenge will be a crucial matchup against hosts Guatemala. Another win could all but seal their place in the knockout round.
Belize’s Remaining Group B Fixtures:
- Sunday, October 26 at 8:00 pm – Belize vs Guatemala
- Monday, October 27 at 3:00 pm – Belize vs Honduras
Depending on results, Belize could advance to:
- Tuesday, October 28 – Semifinals (5:30 pm & 8:00 pm)
- Wednesday, October 29 –
- 5th Place Game (for third-place teams): 10:00 am
- Bronze Medal Game: 3:00 pm
- Gold Medal Game: 8:00 pm
With one win already in the bag and two crucial group matches ahead, Belize’s basketball warriors are focused on pushing through to the medal rounds and bringing home glory for the Jewel.
