By Rubén Morales Iglesias:
Belize’s medal tally at the XII Central American Games climbed to seven on Sunday morning, as canoeists Andres Cabb and Cristian Lopez surged to a Silver medal in the Men’s K2 1000m Canoe Sprint on Lake Petén Itzá in Flores, Guatemala.
The duo powered through the calm waters of Lago Petén Itzá, securing Belize’s third canoeing medal and making the sport, the country’s most successful discipline at the Games. Their silver finish marks Belize’s highest placement in canoeing to date, following two bronze medals earned on Saturday.
Cabb and Lopez’s performance adds to a growing legacy for Belizean paddlers, who have now claimed three of the nation’s seven medals at the regional multi-sport event.

On Saturday, Cristian Lopez had already made waves by winning bronze in the Men’s K1 200m sprint with a time of 44.33 seconds, while Ruth Cruz and Francisca Cruz-Pfaender earned bronze in the Women’s K2 500m — Belize’s first-ever international canoeing medal at a regional games— with a time of 2:37.54. Cruz-Pfaender also placed fourth in the Women’s K1 200m, narrowly missing another podium finish.
Later on Saturday, Belize celebrated its sixth medal when Selvani Yasmin Leiva earned bronze in billiards (8 Ball).
With Sunday’s silver, Team Belize’s medal count now stands at seven:
Nyasha Harris – Silver in Women’s 100 Metres

Brandon Jones – Bronze in Men’s Triple Jump
Belize Women’s National Volleyball Team – Bronze with a 3–1 win over Guatemala
Selvani Yasmin Leiva – Bronze in Billiards (8 Ball)
From the high-altitude tracks of Quetzaltenango to the courts of Guatemala City and the tranquil waters of Petén, Belize’s athletes continue to make their mark in softball, basketball, beach volleyball, rugby, billiards, and sailing.
With canoeing now leading Belize’s medal haul, the sport has emerged as a national stronghold — one stroke at a time.
