Belize’s unbeaten run at the XII Central American Games came to a halt on Tuesday afternoon, as the National Men’s Basketball Team fell 82–74 to Panama in a hard-fought semifinal battle at the Gimnasio Nacional Teodoro Palacios Flores in Guatemala City.
Belize entered the matchup with momentum and confidence, having topped their group with a perfect record. That form was on display early, as the team surged to a narrow 36–34 halftime lead behind sharp ball movement and aggressive defense. However, Panama regrouped in the second half, executing a well-balanced offensive strategy and capitalizing on key turnovers to swing the game in their favor.
The Panamanians outscored Belize 48–38 in the final two quarters, sealing their place in the gold medal match and making history in the process.

“Panama make history and advances to the men’s basketball final!” declared the official XII Juegos Centroamericanos Guatemala 2025 Facebook page, celebrating the team’s collective performance and determination.
Despite the loss, the Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association expressed pride in the team’s journey:
“Tough game for our men’s basketball team today as they fell to Panama in the semifinals. Despite the loss, we’re proud of them throughout the tournament.”
Belize will now shift focus to the bronze medal match, scheduled for Wednesday against either Guatemala or Nicaragua, who are playing in the second semifinal Tuesday night. The team remains determined to finish strong and bring home hardware from Guatemala.
