By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean sprinter Nyasha Alicia Harris delivered a powerful performance in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, claiming silver in the Women’s 100 Metres final at the 12th Central American Games on Saturday, October 18, 2025. Her time of 11.86 seconds not only earned her second place but also marked Belize’s first medal at this year’s regional games.
Competing at 7,982 feet above sea level—a challenging altitude for sprint events—Harris held her composure in Lane 3 against a strong field of regional contenders. Guatemala’s Mariandree Chacón Aroche took gold in 11.66 seconds, setting a new JDCA record, while Nicaragua’s Maria Alejandra Carmona Blass finished third in 11.93 seconds.
Harris’ silver medal adds to her growing list of accomplishments, including a bronze in high jump at the 2024 U18 CODICADER Games and a fourth-place finish in the 100m at the 2025 CADICA Senior Championships in Managua. Her performance in Quetzaltenango confirms her emergence as one of Belize’s top multi-event athletes.
Earlier in the day, fellow Belizean Kamron Gentle also made headlines by qualifying for the Men’s 100 Metres final. Gentle placed third in his semifinal heat with a time of 10.93 seconds, securing an automatic spot in the final alongside top sprinters from Panama, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Guatemala.
The Belize Athletics Team, led by Head Coach Frederick Evans and Head of Delegation Jada Parchue, arrived in Guatemala on Thursday, October 16, ready to compete against Central America’s best. The delegation includes Harris, Gentle, Tamia Bennett, and Brandon Jones—each bringing national pride and competitive spirit to the track.
Quetzaltenango’s high-altitude conditions have tested athletes across disciplines, but Harris’ result and Gentle’s qualification prove that Belize’s preparation and resilience are paying off.
