By Zoila Palma: As Belize celebrates Women’s Month in 2025, we spotlight a remarkable woman whose dedication to community service, human rights advocacy, and political leadership has paved the way for future generations.
Meet Thea Garcia-Ramirez, a proud Corozaleña and a woman whose accomplishments continue to inspire and empower.
Thea is not just a mother of three, a wife, and a daughter—she is a trailblazer who has broken barriers in various fields.
She made history as the first woman to be appointed General Manager of the Belize Airports Authority. In addition, she serves as the Chair of the National Women’s Commission, Commissioner of the People’s Constitution Commission, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Social Investment Fund.
Her leadership extends to her role as Chair of the Corozal Think Tank, where she continues to champion the needs of her community.
Her journey into public service began in her youth, where she was involved in youth groups from the age of thirteen. Her leadership continued to grow as she served as Vice President of the Corozal District Youth Commission and as a Belize Youth Movement National Executive member. Thea’s commitment to her community led her to serve as a PUP Corozal Bay Executive member, and later, as the Chair of the PUP Northern Caucus, making her the only woman ever to hold that position.
“Our Corozal Bay community is much more than just people living together within our town limits; the term embraces our shared values, history, identity, culture, and deep sense of belonging to this special place we call home. I believe that the focused fostering of that sense of community through targeted projects ensures that our effort will remain people centered. Our motivation and pride as a unified community will grow.
The ideals of equity and equality will guide us as we strive together purposefully to create a community that leaves no one behind and ensures that those most vulnerable in our community are afforded equal opportunities and the extra help they need to secure a dignified life,” Thea says.
Throughout her career, Thea has exemplified leadership that prioritizes the collective well-being. Her unwavering belief in equity and equality continues to guide her work as she strives to create a Corozal Bay community that is united, proud, and purpose-driven.
As Thea continues her mission, her dedication to her community and country remains steadfast. Whether in her role in national governance or in her tireless advocacy, Thea Garcia-Ramirez is a true example of strength, resilience, and the power of women in leadership.
