By Zoila Palma: In honor of Women’s Month, we celebrate the incredible journey and achievements of Ingrid “Nurse Ingrid” Gomez, a dedicated healthcare professional whose passion for nursing has transformed lives in Belize. Born on December 16, 1981, in Dangriga, Ingrid’s story is one of perseverance, determination, and an unwavering desire to help others.
Ingrid’s early years were filled with challenges. Raised on a small farm in Pomona Village, Stann Creek District, she fondly recalls living in a cozy cottage on a hill, where she felt at home despite financial hardships. “It was small and cozy for us, it was like a mansion,” Ingrid reflects. Due to her biological parents’ financial struggles, Ingrid moved between different homes and adopted parents at a young age, facing instability. However, she always held onto one big dream: to become a nurse.
“I wanted to be a NURSE because I wanted something where I can help others,” Ingrid says. Her commitment to education never wavered, and despite the challenges, she graduated third in her class from Canaan High School in June 2001.
Her new adopted parents, though already supporting their own children, did everything they could to ensure Ingrid’s dreams were realized. They found a way for her to study abroad, even though financial constraints meant Ingrid couldn’t stay in the dorms and instead lived with the Dean of her university. In April 2002, Ingrid embarked on her nursing program, excelling academically and completing a four-year course in just 3½ years. In 2005, Ingrid and her sister both earned their Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Upon her return to Belize, Ingrid began her career at La Loma Luz Hospital in Santa Elena, Cayo, before moving to Belize Healthcare Partners in Belize City in 2008. There, she began working in the hemodialysis department, where her passion for helping others continued to flourish. Ingrid furthered her expertise by completing additional certifications, including a course in peritoneal dialysis and a certification in hemodialysis at Galileo University in Guatemala City.
In 2010, after graduating from the hemodialysis program, Ingrid became a dialysis nurse at the Miguel Rosado Dialysis Center. Her leadership, hard work, and dedication earned her the role of Senior Hemodialysis Nurse and Supervisor of the Hemodialysis Department. Ingrid’s commitment and teamwork helped the Miguel Rosado Dialysis Center achieve international certification in 2018, marking a significant milestone in Belize’s healthcare system.
Ingrid’s expertise and dedication have taken her beyond Belize’s borders. She represented Belize at the XXXIV National Nephrology Congress in Veracruz, Mexico, where she was invited as a special guest speaker for the congress under the theme “Providing Quality Critical Care.”
Nurse Ingrid is also an adjunct lecturer for St. Johns Nursing School.
Despite her many accomplishments, Ingrid remains grounded, always giving credit to those who supported her along the way. She thanks God for her strength, her parents, Appleton and Sandra Carr, and all the mothers who helped raise her. She is deeply grateful to her sisters for their unwavering support.
Ingrid’s advice to young Belizeans is simple yet profound: “Never be ashamed of who you are or where you came from. When you look back, that is where your strength comes from. Your journey may seem difficult, but focus—at the end of the tunnel, there is always light after the dark. Make your goals and crawl, creep, or walk, but never stop going forward. Don’t allow poverty or any obstacle to define where you want to be in life. Be the change you want to see. Your future is not defined by anything or anyone but yourself. Determination is the key to success.”
To her fellow nurses, Ingrid emphasizes the power of teamwork: “Nursing is not a competition, it’s team work!”
Today, we celebrate Nurse Ingrid Gomez—an inspiring Belizean woman whose resilience, hard work, and dedication to the healthcare field are leaving a lasting impact on her community and beyond.
