In celebration of International Women’s Day under the theme “Accelerating Action: Rights, Equality, and Empowerment for All Women and Girls,” Breaking Belize News (BBN) is proud to honor one of Belize’s own inspiring superwomen, Zoila Maria Palma.
A passionate community activist and digital journalist from Santa Elena, Cayo, Zoila’s journey is a testament to dedication, resilience, and a deep commitment to both education and social impact.
A proud graduate of Saint Ignatius High School, she was named Valedictorian of her class in 2007 and earned recognition from the National Honor Roll Society and the Belize Catholic Association of Principals of Secondary Schools. Her commitment to excellence continued when she pursued an Associate Degree in Primary Education at Sacred Heart Junior College in Cayo, which laid the foundation for her future in education and community service.
In 2016, Zoila discovered her passion for writing, which led her to become a digital journalist with Breaking Belize News, the leading online news source in Belize. Through her work, Zoila has become an influential voice in Belizean journalism, authoring numerous news articles that have even been cited by international media outlets. Her dedication to truth and transparency in journalism has earned her recognition and opened doors to numerous professional opportunities.
Zoila’s contributions to journalism extend beyond her writing. In 2017, she attended the Understanding and Reporting on the Budget training hosted by Excellence Media Services. The following year, she was selected for the prestigious U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), focusing on Building Digital Literacy and Media Responsibility in Democracies in the Digital Age.
Additionally, she earned a certificate from the Poynter Institute in Florida, U.S., further enhancing her skills in the evolving field of digital journalism.
Her international exposure continued with her participation in the U.S. Embassy’s Media Tour: From Fear to Facts: Demystifying the ICJ at The Hague, Netherlands, where she met with international law experts and covered the International Court of Justice. She also participated in the Taiwan Media Tour in 2019, gaining insights into the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) and strengthening ties between Belize and Taiwan.
Most recently, in 2023, Zoila covered the state visit of Taiwan’s President, Dr. Tsai Ing-Wen, touring cooperation programs in Cayo, further deepening international relations.
Beyond her professional achievements, Zoila has been a champion for media literacy in Belize, particularly during the 2020 General Elections when she advocated for debunking misinformation and raising awareness about the dangers of viral disinformation. Her role in educating the public on the importance of critical thinking and fact-checking underscores her dedication to ensuring a well-informed society.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Zoila stepped up in her community, organizing food drives in Santa Elena, Cayo, to provide essential support to vulnerable families, demonstrating her commitment to community care and solidarity.
Zoila’s influence extends beyond her work at BBN. As the manager of Palma’s Lumber and Supplies, the family business, she oversees GST, business tax, sales, and marketing operations, proving her versatility and leadership in both the digital and business landscapes.
A devoted mother to two children—Zabrina, a 2nd form student at Sacred Heart College, and Ricardo, a Standard 3 student at Santa Cruz Government School—Zoila is committed to empowering and inspiring the next generation, especially young women, to pursue their dreams and reach their fullest potential.
Zoila’s journey is a true example of how one woman can make a profound impact on her community, the media industry, and beyond.
Her unwavering belief in the importance of the media in the democratic process and her dedication to advancing journalism in the digital age ensures that she will continue to inspire future generations of journalists, particularly women, to shape the future with integrity and passion.
Breaking Belize News celebrates Zoila Palma for her hard work, resilience, and dedication to the betterment of Belize and its people, and for being a shining example of empowerment, education, and service to the community.
