By Aaron Humes: On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the People’s United Party (PUP), a momentous celebration took place as the Prime Minister presented the prestigious George Price Award to esteemed party member Sam Waight at its National Party Council meeting in Orange Walk Town this afternoon. This award, named after the founding father of the PUP, is recognized as the highest honor within the party’s ranks, per Belmopan area representative Oscar Mira.
At 90 years old, Sam Waight, former Cayo South area representative, is celebrated not only for his enduring dedication to the PUP’s ideals but also for his lifelong commitment to public service. Due to his declining health, the award was graciously accepted on his behalf by his daughter, Myrna Waight, who is also a devoted supporter of the party and an active member of the United Women’s Group (UWG) in Belmopan.
“What a great honor for the Hon. Sam Waight and for Belmopan as well!” remarked Mira, underscoring the significance of this recognition not just for Waight but for the community he has served.
The People’s United Party was officially formed on September 29, 1950.
