By Aaron Humes: Following Monday afternoon’s shooting of Sergeant Dalon Kelly of the Belize Police Department, today, Tuesday, Dan Lopez, a 35-year-old farmer, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm, and grievous harm in connection with the shooting. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are yet to be disclosed.
Sergeant Kelly was shot while responding to a land dispute in the Maya Ranch area of Georgeville, Cayo District, his home station. Sergeant Kelly was swiftly transported to the Western Regional Hospital where he is currently in stable condition, but indications are that his injuries are serious.
The shooting reportedly comes amid escalating tensions between local farmers and private landowners in the area, an issue that has been under scrutiny since earlier this year. There have been ongoing reports of disputes over land ownership, with law enforcement having intervened multiple times to de-escalate the situation.
