By Zoila Palma: Our lush Cayo District has earned global recognition once again, ranking among the World’s Top 100 Good Practice Stories at the Green Destinations Global Conference 2025 held in Montpellier, France.
The event brought together more than 300 delegates from over 60 countries, celebrating leading examples of sustainable tourism worldwide.
Belize’s story, titled “Loving Cayo: A Harmonious Blend of Conservation and Culture for a Vibrant Future,” showcases the district’s strong commitment to biodiversity protection, cultural preservation, and community-driven tourism.
The recognition highlights the collaborative efforts of indigenous communities, conservation organizations, private enterprises, and sustainability-focused hospitality brands working together to protect Cayo’s natural and cultural heritage.
The Belize Tourism Board extended congratulations to the local changemakers behind this achievement, including Belize Karst Habitat Conservation, Itzamna Society, Bulridge Ltd., Lucky Dreamer Lodge, Sak-Tunich, and the Green Iguana Conservation Project at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel.
Special thanks were also given to Riviera Maya Sostenible for supporting Belize’s journey toward regenerative tourism. Together, these efforts continue to shape a brighter, more sustainable future for Belize’s tourism industry.
