By Aaron Humes: As the island community of Caye Caulker gears up for a significant referendum on the potential legalization of marijuana, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Belize City–Belmopan has issued a pastoral statement urging residents to vote against the measure. The referendum, which is set to take place next week, has sparked a heated debate about the implications of such a change in law.

In their official statement, the Diocese emphasized the responsibility of Christians and citizens to protect life and uphold family values in Belize. The message cited both biblical references and the teachings of recent popes, including Pope John Paul II, who has spoken out against drug legalization. “Drug addiction is an evil, and with evil there can be no yielding or compromise,” the statement read, highlighting concerns over the potential normalization of drug use among youth and the associated risks to familial integrity and public health.

The Diocese also pointed to negative outcomes observed in other countries that have already legalized marijuana, including increased addiction rates, mental health issues, and family disruptions. Additionally, they voiced concerns that legalization could undermine Belize’s tourism sector, vulnerable to attracting drug-seekers instead of family visitors.

The statement concluded with an appeal to Caye Caulker’s residents to reflect on their values and vote “No” in the upcoming referendum. “This is not just a civic duty but a moral responsibility,” it stressed, framing the decision as crucial to maintaining the community’s integrity.

The voters are being asked to approve whether a regulated industry for cannabis should be set up on the island, with proceeds going to community development.

Voting takes place from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. next Wednesday.
