By Aaron Humes: Easter Sunday morning on Caye Caulker was abruptly disrupted as gunfire erupted in a high-speed chase involving police and masked suspects. The incident unfolded around 4:02 AM when two officers from the Quick Response Team were patrolling Avenida Langosta and noticed a red Lifan three-wheeled cargo vehicle carrying three masked men speeding towards the local Bowen and Bowen distributor.
The officers initiated a pursuit. One of the masked suspects brandished a firearm, opening fire on the police vehicle within close range. In response, the officers swiftly exited their patrol golf cart and sought cover, with one officer returning fire during the brief exchange.
The chase continued to the RCD Wharf, where the driver of the three-wheeler lost control, sending the vehicle plunging into the sea. The suspects managed to escape by transferring to a boat that was reportedly waiting for them near the fishermen’s cooperative.
Police investigators collected a range of evidence from the scene. Among the items recovered from the submerged vehicle and the vicinity were multiple crowbars and steel implements suggestive of a planned break-in. Law enforcement also retrieved 17 expended casings from the shootout site, and they are currently reviewing surveillance footage from along the chase route.
As of now, no suspects have been identified, and the police continue their investigation into the incident.
