By Zoila Palma: Catholics around the world, including in Belize, today begin the 40-day observance of Lent with Ash Wednesday. This season of prayer, fasting, and giving leads up to Easter and is a time for repentance and spiritual renewal.
Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, which spans six and a half weeks before Easter. Catholics aged 18 to 59 are required to fast on this day, starting at age 14.
The tradition of receiving ashes dates back to the 11th century and has its roots in ancient Hebrew customs of penance.
The ashes symbolize human fragility and the need for salvation, reflecting Jesus’ time in the desert before His death.
In his homily, Pope Francis highlighted the importance of the ashes as a reminder of both human vulnerability and the hope found in Christ’s resurrection. He urged believers to “return to God with all our hearts,” emphasizing that, despite our mortality, hope in the risen Lord offers renewal.
Ash Wednesday serves as a reminder to Christians of their fragility and the need for humility, focusing on repentance and spiritual growth during Lent.
