By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Roman Catholic Diocese of Belize City–Belmopan has taken a firm stance against the proposed legalization of marijuana on Caye Caulker, calling it a dangerous move that could “tear Belize down” rather than build it up.

In a pastoral statement issued Friday, the Church warned that legalizing marijuana would lead to increased addiction, weakened family structures, mental health challenges, and moral decay.

“Marijuana does not build Belize up; it tears Belize down,” the Diocese said, adding that drug use “fuels violence, depression, and accidents,” while damaging the social fabric of communities.

The Church urged voters to see beyond economic promises and focus on protecting Belize’s youth, families, and reputation as a safe tourism destination.

The Diocese is calling on all Catholic believers and people of goodwill to vote “No” in the referendum and to pray for “wisdom and unity in this moment of decision.
