By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Hurricane Melissa continues to tear through the northern Caribbean, bringing catastrophic flooding, landslides, and dangerous storm surge to multiple countries, according to the National Hurricane Center’s 5:00 AM advisory.
The Category 5 hurricane has already caused widespread destruction in Jamaica, where power lines are down and roads are impassable. Officials have urged residents to remain indoors until conditions improve and to exercise extreme caution during cleanup.
In Haiti and the Dominican Republic, torrential rain and landslides have isolated communities, with reports of extensive property damage and dangerous flash flooding.
Meanwhile, eastern Cuba continues to experience hurricane-force winds and life-threatening flooding, while the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos brace for heavy rain, storm surge, and damaging winds throughout the day.
Looking ahead, the storm’s path shows it moving north-northeast toward Bermuda, which could begin experiencing hurricane conditions by Thursday night.
Meteorologists warn that Melissa’s rainfall totals could exceed 16 inches in localized areas, exacerbating the flood and landslide risk across the region.
The NHC continues to monitor the system closely, urging residents across the affected areas to follow official instructions and remain in safe shelters until all-clear notices are given.
