Case dismissed against George Carr after woman withdraws assault charge but he remains in prison over unpaid fines

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City resident had a common assault charge dismissed last week but remained behind bars due to outstanding court fines.

George Carr appeared before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2 at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. The charge arose from a domestic dispute involving Carr and a woman earlier this year.

The charge was dismissed after the complainant informed the court that she did not wish to pursue further action against Carr.

Despite the dismissal, Carr was not released because he is serving jail time in connection with unpaid fines. Carr asked whether he could make a payment toward the fines and be released, but the magistrate explained that he had previously elected to serve the fines through imprisonment.

The court informed Carr that he must now pay the entire outstanding balance to secure his release and cannot make a partial payment or request an extension.

Carr was subsequently escorted back to the Belize Central Prison.
